The
students read about the illustrator, Jerry Pinkney . As a young boy,
he liked to draw pictures and wanted to become an artist. His parents
encouraged his talent, and Jerry Pinkney realized his dream. He is
now an artist for many children's books.
Next, the story
of The Patchwork Quilt, that Jerry Pinkney illustrated, was read.
It is about a grandmother who sews a quilt using fabric from family members'
clothing. The quilt becomes a story about the family.
Last, our class
made quilt squares, telling something special about themselves. A
button was to be included in the picture. They learned to sew
running stitches and buttons onto the squares. Finally,
the squares were sewn into the quilt that is pictured above.
